1961: Bay of Pigs Invasion
DATE: April 1961DESCRIPTION: This event was an unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba undertaken by a paramilitary group from the USA. After Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, the US felt threatened due to his communist ties. 1400 CIA-trained Cuban exiles landed on the Bay of Pigs in Cuba with plans to assassinate Castro. However, Castro had learned of the invasion and his troops waited when they landed, then quickly destroyed them. This was an event that not only made Americans look very, very weak in combating the threat of communism.
BLAME: . The blame here is on the Americans themselves because they started this conflict due to Castro turning Cuba communist. The plan itself was also inherited by President Kennedy from Eisenhower, who are the presidents of the USA. They were clearly the aggressors in this situation as they were the one that were responsible for sending their Cuban exiles to assassinate Castro.
TENSION INCREASE: This increases the tensions from America as the people are getting more and more afraid of the powers of communism plaguing the world, and that the American’s power might be diminishing. This was also a loss for the Americans against the powers of communism, which is sure to increase tensions worldwide between the capitalist and communist states. +1
