1960: Cuba openly aligns itself with the Soviet Union and their policies

DATE: December 19th, 1960

DESCRIPTION: In 1959, Fidel Castro overthrew the Batista regime and took power in Cuba. Castro quickly formed an alliance with the Soviet Union and declared Cuba communist, and proceeded to nationalize American owned plantations and factories. This event highlighted the direct alliance between Cuba and the Soviet Union through the sharing of policies and ideologies. This makes them a force to be reckoned with.

BLAME: This event was mainly the fault of the previous ruling party, which was a corrupt regime being led by Fulgencio Batista. He had seized power illegally in 1933 and held controlling interests in every major Cuban industry. Many peaceful attempts had been made to reform this system peacefully but after many failures, it was clear that only a violent revolution would work. This is the reason why Fidel Castro came to power – he overthrew the corrupt regime to try and redo things.

TENSION INCREASE: This event increased world tensions, especially from America, because Cuba had become yet another communist country with ties to Soviet Russia. America was clearly displeased which this event to the point where they would even launch an assault on them later on, known as the Bay of Pigs invasion. The threats of communism were ever increasing from the communist powers of Russia and Cuba. The tensions were rising as more and more communist powers started working together to combat the capitalist state of America. +2
