1949: NATO Ratified

DATE: April 4th 1949

DESCRIPTION: This event highlighted the establishment of NATO or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This organization is a system of collective defence where its member’s states agree to mutual defence with each other.

BLAME: The blame was obviously the allies fault this is because of the formation of NATO and with its formation means an angered Russia. Tensions were rising in the cold war further more with this organization forming in help for the allies. The Soviets are rattled by this organization with the collective defence they have it is almost impossible for the Soviets to counter this NATO group due to the lack of power they have to go against the allied forces especially when they have formed this big wall of defences against the communist powers. The blame here is due to the Americans because of the formation of NATO the Soviets are on edge and makes them nervous. This rises the tension more and more as now the allies have a front that the Soviets can counteract.

TENSION INCREASE: NATO being established means that more structuralized defences for the allies. Their goal was put simply in this quote. “Too keep Russians out, the Allies in, and the Germans down.” NATO was made for this one purpose back in the cold war. This was obviously a tactic to keep Russia down and it angered Stalin. This makes it harder for him to pressure the allies because of the collective defence idea of NATO. +2
