1948: Berlin Blockade begins lasting 11 months

DATE: June 24th, 1948

DESCRIPTION: The Berlin Blockade was considered to be one of the first crises to happen in the duration of the Cold War. The Soviets blocked the Western allies’ railway, roads, and canals access to the sectors of Berlin under the allied control.

BLAME: This angered Truman and this blockade was to cripple the occupying allied forces to get into Berlin. This blockade lasted for 11 months so it hindered them for that time period. The tensions also rise because of this because of the blockade it prevents the Americans to do anything in Berlin, it blocks off resources and easy ways of transportation into the city of Berlin. The Americans angered by this try a lot to end the blockade and get their hold of Berlin back into their hands. The blame here is all due to Stalin, yes this blockade was to stop the Americans, but this also made the Americans hate the Soviets more because of the nuisance they have created due to the blockade.

TENSION INCREASE: The Berlin blockade was the first crisis to spark the ever growing the hatred between the USA and the Soviets because it increased the amount of tension brought onto the Cold War with this blockade it prevented supplies and men to come through to Berlin halting the US. +2
